About the service

The Musculoskeletal Interface Service supports patients who have a problem with their musculoskeletal system e.g. muscles, bones, joints, ligaments or tendons. 

The service sorts referrals from the Referral Support Service and GPs to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care for their musculoskeletal condition.

The service works closely with the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service.

Who is this service for?

This service deals with musculoskeletal referrals which may require decision-making in order to establish the best course treatment from a range of options including steroid injection therapy, investigations such as MRI or ultrasound scanning, or referral to a surgeon.

We review each referral and decide the appropriate service it requires. Some referrals are accepted for assessment within the service; others may be referred directly to an orthopaedic surgeon.

Referral Criteria

This service provides triage and intervention for musculoskeletal conditions with the following criteria for patients who are referred for orthopaedic assessment:

  • Diagnosis is uncertain
  • Orthopaedic surgical referral may be required
  • They have not responded to physiotherapy/podiatry
  • Advice is needed regarding diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis
  • A possible MRI or other specialist investigation is needed
  • A specialist steroid injection may be required
  • They require access to biomechanical podiatry
  • They can travel to an outpatient department.

You can refer electronically to this service via ‘Managed Referral’ on EMIS. Referrals are electronically triaged within a day and re-directed to the appropriate service within the Musculoskeletal pathway. This may include re-directing to orthopaedics for a surgical opinion if the referral provides evidence to meet the ‘Criteria Based Access’ policies. Please find link below

Cancelled / missed appointments


If you are unable to make your appointment with the Musculoskeletal service due to urgent reasons, we ideally need a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to reschedule your appointment. To cancel your appointment please contact our telephone bookings line, on 01275 546777, during the following hours:

Monday – Thursday: 9.00 to 16.30

Friday: 9.00 to 16.00

Outside of these hours there is the option to leave a voicemail regarding your cancellation. However you will need to call back within working hours to re-arrange an appointment. If the service does not receive contact regarding a re-booking within one week of the cancellation then you will be discharged back to your referring clinician.

If you fail to attend your appointment without contacting the department or cancel more than two appointments within the course of treatment then you will be discharged from the service with a letter to your referring clinician.
